I have been walking the eclectic witch path for over 5 years now. For some, this might seem like a short period of time while other can see the time and effort I have put into learning my own craft. Whatever your take is, you are entitled to your own thoughts and feelings.
Throughout the years, I have watched new age practices become a popular trend in mainstream media. With the likes of Sabrina the Teenage Witch (the new one), Crystals and Tarot Cards becoming a regular topic of conversation on social media - especially Instagram. While it's really exciting to see new people starting to get in touch with their own spirituality, there comes the shadow side of mass conversion and that is Comparison.
Lately, I have been reading and watching some fabulous tarot readers, witches and other spiritual practitioners. They have a healthy following of avid fans, a sleek social media presences and products that are aesthetically to die for. I started my spiritual path with no intentions of sharing it online, but as a classic Gemini, I wanted to share my discoveries and hopefully help anyone along the way. So with that being said, I start looking at the statistics, how many people am I engaging with and who do I want to engage with?
This was the beginning of my spiral.
The spiral began with subscribing to a few paid communities. The initial reason was to be in a private group surrounded by people eager as me to up skill on their spiritual knowledge. It started off well, but as time when on I started to realise that the topics across the each of communities were pretty much the same (they were just presented differently). So I dropped the ones that I felt I had out grown and started with a few groups that had different material.
Then I got it into my head that I should start my own spiritual practice. I started doing free tarot readers and joined witchcraft communities on Facebook. I observed and asked questions and built relationships with some really interesting people. I continued my studies and worked on my own practice and developed my business skills. Everything was humming along quite nicely, until I came to designing my website.
Having previous ran a business blog, I wasn't intimidated by the back end setup. I was intimidated with how other spiritual practitioners portrayed themselves online. There was the whimsical, the witchy and the professional practitioner looking site. There was aesthetically pleasing products that were presented with some amazing copy writing. The beautiful stock pictures or pictures of the people. The long list of as featured or as seen.
I instantly felt not good enough. Yet, I had caught the bug. I had just gone professional in my tarot reading after hours training, hours of free readings and hours of doing free events. I felt comfortable enough to say that I was indeed a professional intuitive tarot reader. So the grind began, I tried my best using what resources I had to make myself look like the successful practitioners out there.
To save this post from becoming a novel, recently I did and interview with the beautiful Joana Ponder from Yes and Your Life. In this podcast Joana and I spoke about comparison syndrome, so click on the image below and enjoy!
