Have you ever gotten overwhelmed by the jargon used when it comes to a natal chart? In this series I breakdown the meanings behind Rising, Sun and Moon Signs.

Hello my wonderful waywards,

Recently I have been speaking with quite a few people about astrology signs, and many were confused by what Rising signs, Moon signs and Sun signs meant. So I wanted to do a couple of posts about the three signs I mentioned about. Of course, there are more signs than just these three, but I wanted to keep it simple to start. Plus if you do like them, then I will continue the series!!

First, let's talk about astrological signs. Knowing that written words cannot be my strength at times, I have pulled a passage from Kevin Burk's Astrology: Understanding the Birth Chart:

Astrology is the study of cycles. By observing the cyclical movements of the planets, we are able to gain a greater understanding of the cycles and patterns in our own lives. Astrology can be a powerful tool for healing and transformation, and it can be a key that can unlock a greater spiritual connection to the universe. Although astrology is not fortune-telling, when skillfully applied, astrology can be an extremely effective predictive tool. On a personal level, astrology can be used to gain a deeper understanding of our individual life paths and life experiences. [It] can give us insight into our personal issues, our patterns, our fears, and our dreams. We can gain insight into our purpose in life and gain a stronger sense of self. Astrology is a tool that can help us understand and unlock our highest potentials, and that can teach us how to live in harmony with the universe. - Cafe Astrology

It is the initial understanding that can help you, many of us are sucked into the mainstream media about what star signs are (I definitely was one of those people when I was younger). Yet, the media barely scrap the surface because it takes the individual to understand what they are reading and how to apply it. There are also many layers to a person's birth chart. I say chart because when you are born then are 12 planets (mercury, venus etc), sitting in different astrological signs in different houses.

So to break this down for you:

  • The planets represent the parts of your nature

  • The zodiac signs are what are you like mentally

  • The houses are the areas of your life

Still with me?

A birth (natal) chart is a mapping system that shows you different faucets and values of you as an individual. So going back to what I said at the beginning when some talks about their rising sign (or another term Ascendant) they are indicating that an astrological sign is sitting in a certain house. The Ascendant house is concerned with how a person has learned to present themselves to the world, especially in public and in impersonal situations.

As an example; if your rising sign is Gemini the trait you might exhibit in that house is a strong communicator eager to build connections.

It is a lot to take in I know. When you have a moment, I want you to get your natal chart down, you can do this through astro.com and its free! All you need it where you were born and at what time (if possible). Once you have done this, you will be able to start looking at the chart with a different outlook, plus this website gives you a breakdown of the planets and signs that are in each of your houses.

My next post we will delve into the meanings of the rising signs!

Till next time.

Love and Light,

ree
